Woody Woodpecker

May 27, 2008

First off, I promise not all of my pictures will be of birds!  :)

I saw this big guy fly right over my head, very close to my head, actually.  Luckily, he decided to have lunch on a tree close to our house.  I was able to get inside and get the camera while he was still eating.  Not a bad shot overall.

Bald Eagle - Part II

May 12, 2008

Here is another picture of one of the eagles mentioned yesterday.  I have several very good pictures but they are all variations on these.  I have to go back and see if I can get a picture of them sitting in the tree.  That was beautiful.

Bald Eagle

May 11, 2008

As we were driving home today from some running, we saw a pair of bald eagles sitting in a tree.  HUGE eagles sitting in a tree.  I got turned around, stopped, got on the Canon 75-200 F/2.8 L lens.  As I was walking towards them, they took off.  I’m not sure if they were hungry or I spooked them.  Either way, they took off quickly.

This is the first shot I got off before they went too far away.  There are several others.  I hope to get a few more posted shortly.  The detail in this one at full size is incredible.  The claw underneath, the curve of the beak, the individual feathers.  Awesome!

A girl and her kite

May 6, 2008

It was a great weekend in Minnesota. Threats of snow on Saturday morning did not happen but on Sunday the temp got up into the “very nice” range with plenty of sunshine. We visited some parks and took plenty of pictures. Here is one I liked of a girl flying a kite.

I had watched her and her daddy get the kite into the air. There was plenty of wind. He thought it was humorous that I was taking a picture.

I love how blue the sky turned out.  That’s the circular polarizer filter at work.

Cattail

May 1, 2008

Cattail

My mother tells of a time she convinced my dad to stop and pick up some cattails (a flowering, seeding plant that looks like a cat’s tail) intending to bring them home to us kids. He got very dirty getting them but mom was happy. She put them under the car seat to keep them safe for the drive home. She forgot them.

If you have any experience with cattails you know they will seed whether they are stuck in the ground or not. These things seeded out and waited under the car seat for just the right moment. Mom opened a car window which blew these millions of seeds into the air, inside the car… They are coughing and choking on these flowering, fluffy seeds and cannot see a thing as they are driving down the highway.

The way mom tells it, dad was not too happy at all and had absolutely no sense of humor about it. I don’t think they ever got the seeds entirely out of the car.

I was walking around a small pond waiting for a job interview and caught sight of these. These two were sitting out on their own. Focusing on a small area with a wide aperture (F2.8) was not easy especially from a distance great enough to not mess up my dress shoes.

Rusty parts

Rusty parts

Something about this small part of a large tractor caught my eye. I like the shadows and the fact that it looks like the thing has not been run in years. It cannot be that old but Minnesota winters will do that.

This one does not really count since it was taken over a year ago but I like it and wanted to share.

Daytime moon

April 25, 2008

There is something about the moon during the day. We were walking the dog when I saw this one.

A little further on, it got better….

Washing the car

April 25, 2008

I don’t know why I decided to do this.  I was getting ready to wash the car and decided to pull out the camera.  In retrospect, it would have been better with the top down.

What do you think of this one?  I need to be more careful with background items or at least fix the depth of field so the background blurs.

A start in earnest

April 13, 2008

OK, I haven’t done so well. Now, I’m starting in earnest. Digital-photography-school.com has a weekly contest. This week was “spring.” Spring in Minnesota is a bit cold so I wanted to convey the icy nature of the lakes here. Enjoy!

By the way, this is not my dog.  We do have a dog but not this one.  This particular little pooch was playing with his people when he noticed the lake, noticed there were no people between him and the lake and decided to make a break for it.  He thought it was a great game to run from his people as he went in and out of the still-frozen lake.
